Kanata Muslim Association Zakat Committee

Did you know there are many low-income Muslim families right here in our own community
that are struggling in silence?

Founded in 2019, the KMA Zakat Committee has helped more than 100 families in need.
The Zakat Committee is 100% volunteer run, no salaries are paid – all zakat donations are
given to families/individuals in need here in Ottawa/Gatineau.

Many zakat applicants are newcomers, people with chronic illness that are unable to work,
elderly people on a fixed, limited income, single mothers, families with children with
mental/physical disabilities and some students. Newcomer families often need help
immediately upon arrival until they are eligible for government aid, and the KMA zakat
committee fills in the gap.

We conduct a thorough assessment to determine zakat eligibility and we help by providing
limited financial assistance as well as referrals to government or community support services
when needed. We coordinate with the other major masjids in Ottawa where and when
needed.

Your zakat is a great trust and responsibility and utmost diligence is taken to ensure the
money goes directly to those in need. Zakat funds disbursed are done through “shura”
(consultation) among zakat committee members and in some cases also with the KMA
board.

With the recent rise in inflation and cost of housing, we have seen a steady increase in zakat
applications which makes our work more important now than ever.

Your support is greatly appreciated!
